Lecco Bell Tower – Matitone

The bell tower of the Basilica of San Nicolò is 96 meters and represents a symbol of Lecco; is the second highest bell tower in Italy and one of the highest among the European ones. Its shape looks like a big pencil, due to this it is called “matitone”.

If you want to visit Lecco, the visit to the bell tower is a must! From the bells room, you will have amazing sightseeing of the lake, the city, and the surrounding mountains.

Lecchesi (from Italian: citizens of Lecco) are proud of their bell tower, full of history and always there! Can you imagine? The first time the bells sound spread over Lecco was in 1904, the Christmas night.

There’s another reason why the Bell Tower is important: it’s built on the ancient walls that surrounded Lecco in the Manzoni period. During the visit, you will discover a lot about these walls, and since Lecco is a little city… why not you could visit also the other visible parts.
